Job Summary

Compass, Inc. seeks a highly-skilled, self-starter for the position of Director of Properties, Grants and Administration.  This position works primarily at our main office located in Beltsville, MD, reports to the Executive Director and oversees management of Compass properties (community residences for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities), develops and oversees grants related to Compass’ properties and service expansion and provides administrative oversight for office operations.   The Director of Properties, Grants and Administration supervises the following positions:  Maintenance Supervisor, Administrative Assistant, and Technology Specialist.  This position is a member of the Senior Leadership team and chairs the Admissions, Review and Discharge Committee.  Some travel to community residences will be required as needed.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee property management which includes supervising the Maintenance Supervisor, development and oversight of properties grant management (i.e. Community Development Block Grants, Maryland Housing Trust grants, etc.) and working with Quality Assurance to develop and implement a home inspection system to ensure housing code compliance and overall maintenance, safety and beautification of the home environments.
  • Develop and implement maintenance tracking system working with Maintenance Supervisor to ensure timely and thorough completion of property maintenance requests.
  • Provide oversight and management of the Capital Budget.
  • Work with Maintenance Supervisor regarding oversight of external contractors as needed for home repairs and renovations.
  • Provide oversight for company vehicles ensuring timely registration renewals, emissions testing, vehicle maintenance, insurance compliance and asset management.
  • Provide administrative oversight for issues related to safe operations of vehicles including monitoring and proper follow through for traffic and parking tickets, gps monitoring and accidents.
  • Implement fraud protection procedures to monitor vehicles gas consumption and mileage reimbursement rates.
  • Oversee office management functions including supervision of administrative assistant/office management as well as technology/computer help desk support.
  • Oversee the start-up and development of new capped waiver programs.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of grants calendar to track submission and reporting deadlines for all grants developed and applied for by Compass.
  • Provide development and oversight of grant templates and work with other Compass staff in the development of additional grants
  • Chair the Admissions, Review and Discharge Committee and lead the agency in reviewing and development of admissions and discharge decisions.
  • Provide administrative assistance to the Executive Director as needed including Board of Director relations and development of meeting minutes.
  • Work with and assist the Executive Director and Compass’ staff in the planning and coordination of company-wide special events.
  • Work with and assist the Executive Director and Compass’ staff in with identifying and approaching donor prospects, planned giving campaigns, and capital and special campaigns.

Qualifications and Skills

At least five years of administrative or management experience working for organizations that support individuals with disabilities.  Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or Non Profit Administration or a closely related field is preferred however equivalent combination of related experience and completion of college coursework in a related field will be accepted.  Prior background with grant development, development of waiver services and property management is preferred.

In addition the ideal candidate will possess:

  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills are required with strong attention to detail.
  • A strong track record as an implementer and project manager who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently and be a self-starter, and enjoyment for creating and implementing new initiatives.
  • High-energy, responsiveness and leadership ability.
  • Prior experience in grant development and implementing new initiatives or expansion of services.
  • Prior experience and knowledge of best practices for supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with staff, leadership, board members and other Compass supporters.

Compensation and Work Conditions:  $62,000 to $67,000 per year dependent on qualifications.  Excellent benefits including health, dental, vision, life insurance, short term disability, and 401k retirement benefits with excellent employer match.  Compass provides a collaborative, family-friendly work culture with frequent engagement opportunities for our workforce, including wellness activities and use of a small gym on site.  Work week schedule is typically M-F 9a-5p with some limited flexibility. Some evening and weekend commitments, especially around special events or fund-raisers may be needed. Must be able to sit for extended periods, bend, pull, push and lift up to 40 pounds (lifting is infrequent.) Must be able to use computer (Microsoft Office Suites), telephones, fax machine, calculator, copier and other office equipment as needed.
