Director of Employment and Community Services

Compass, Inc., a progressive non-profit agency supporting individuals with developmental disabilities located in Beltsville, Md.  We are seeking a highly-skilled leader with a demonstrated record of successful program development and management of customized employment and community supports.  The Director of Employment and Community Services oversees the Employment and Community Services Department which consists of Employment Services, Meaningful Day, and Community Learning Services.  This position supervises two Employment Specialists and one Community Services Manager who under the Director’s leadership provide a key role in discovery, individualized job carving and customizing employment and day supports including entrepreneurship opportunities that facilitate success as defined in each person’s IP.  The overall objective of the this position is to promote quality and meaningful substance in the lives of people with disabilities and ensure sufficient funding for each person to support health and safety needs while also allowing personal and meaningful growth by developing and administering individual service funding plans.

The ideal candidate will possess

  1. Proven track record of successful program development and direct experience with successful employment of individuals with developmental disabilities.
  2. Experience with business development or community engagement to include Business Advisory Councils, working with local chambers of commerce or local employers to facilitate job development.
  3. Progressive philosophical and creative approach in development micro enterprises and entrepreneurial opportunities, utilizing individualized and customized supports and discovery in developing employment plans and business plans that match the interests, dreams, desires and strengths of individuals with disabilities
  4. Strong, demonstrated supervisory and management skills
  5. Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  6. Excellent customer service skills and ability to work effectively with family members/guardians as well as state and local governing authorities
  7. A keen interest in improving the quality of life for the individuals supported by Compass, Inc.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or in related field. Or a combination of relevant experience and education. At least five years’ experience working in human services with persons with disabilities in employment development/customized employment, with at least 3 years of experience at the supervisory level.  Skills or experience in maintenance/remodeling, artistry, gardening, and/or fabrication of adaptive equipment are all strongly desired.

Compensation and Work Conditions:  $68,000 – $73,000 annual salary depending on qualifications. Excellent benefits. Hours of office operation are typically 9a-5p, but may need to respond to issues before or after work hours.  Individual will be working part of the time in an office environment, and part of the time in the community (outreach and job development, partner building.)  Must be able to sit for extended periods, bend, pull, push and lift up to 40 pounds (lifting is infrequent.) Must be able to use computer (Microsoft Office Suites), telephones, fax machine, calculator, copier and other office equipment as needed. Must have own car and be able to drive to community work sites.
