Director of Community Living

Compass, Inc. is a progressive, nonprofit human services location that provides support services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Maryland.   Our main office is located in Beltsville, MD and we have residential facilities located in Montgomery, Prince Georges, Howard and Charles Counties.   We also provide community-based employment and day support services.  Our mission is to support individuals to realize their dreams and live fulfilling lives as valued members of their community.   We are currently accepting applications for the position of Director of Community Living.

Job Summary

The Director of Community Living reports to the Executive Director and provides day-to-day supervision and direction to a large Residential Services Department, overseeing the provision of supports to individuals with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring mental health needs.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Direct Supervision of Assistant Director and up to 3 - 4 Program Administrators
  • Development and implementation of Service Funding Plans, ensuring operations are conducted in fiscally responsible manner.
  • Ensuring supports are delivered within our person-centered models while still maintaining compliance with COMAR and other governing regulations.
  • Develop individualized budets
  • Coordinate special events
  • Conduct internal audits
  • Develop plans of correction.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Progressive developmental disabilities program management experience with the day-to-day operations of a large non-profit organization
  • Significant experience in the principles and application of person-centered planning
  • Strong ability to prepare concise and accurate analysis for executive level decision-making
  • Knowledge of budgeting and understanding of financial statements
  • Experience within the social services field and applicable Federal and state agencies
  • Strong administrative as well as clerical skills
  • Strong computer skills including MS Excel, MS Outlook, and MS Word
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at once and ensure proper follow through as needed
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people
  • A high level of commitment to take initiative and maintain a positive “can-do” attitude
  • A high level of personal accountability, integrity, and ethical standards

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services, Special Education, or strongly related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years progressive management experience with the day-to-day operations of a large non-profit organization in the field of Developmental Disabilities
  • At least two (2) of which are in a Director or Assistant Director capacity.  
  • Master’s degree in related field and additional experience a plus.  

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive annual salary based upon experience and education.
